In the world of consumer LED lighting, it seems there is always a new development. I recently had a chance to chat with Todd Mane gold – Head of Product Marketing, LED Lamps for Philipsto find out what the company is up to and where they are headed. Last year, Philips introduced its Slim Style bulb. It looked kind of like a lollipop, entered the market at just below $10 and now retails for under $8: a classic case of driving volumes and economies of scale.
Lighting can also become part of an entertainment network, and it can also integrate with other technologies in a connected space, be it your home or a dance hall. So Hue can connect your lights with the Nest thermostat and smoke alarm. When you are away from the home, Nest knows it, and can signal the lights to turn on and off to simulate a presence in the home. Fire? The smoke alarm can signal the lights to emit red light, which provides better visibility in a smoky room. Party? Hue can be tied in to music and change colours with the beat.
